Internet and Egypt
I made this image to make a commentary on how the internet puts a lot of noise and distraction between what is really important in the world. I think it is important to realize that while internet memes are a source of culture today, it becomes a problem if we're all looking at the latest Hipster Ariel no one is paying attention to international crises. While I love Hipster Ariel ("I love the sea / It was too... mainstream") it is completely irrelevant to much of anything.
The linguistic meaning of this piece, "Meanwhile, on the internet" is meant to starkly contrast the image on...
In the game?
We view images everyday through media such as television and the internet. Society does not usually stop to think about how their subconscious is perceiving these images, and they simply go about their day without giving it a second thought. However, it is important not to become too familiar with the world around us, therefore it is crucial to look at these images in another light. My image can be analyzed (like all other images) using the same these levels that Roland Barthes uses in his essay titled Rhetoric of Image.
Viewing this image on the simple...
Do you know why you Relay?
The bad times will pass if I don’t blow them up into tragedies. The Al-Anon daily reminder handbook gives this as one day’s snippet of wisdom. Ever since a close friend of mine shared it with me, this quotation has resonated within my mind. While I struggle with something other than alcoholism in my family, my family did experience loss at the hands of cancer. I wanted to keep my collage for this assignment simple; I wanted to do as we discussed in class and let the image speak for itself. If you read my blog, you know that I lost my father to cancer. This...
The Scream (Never Say Never)
“The vibrations in the air not only affected my eye, but my ear as well because I really heard a scream, and then I painted The Scream." Edvard Munch never intended to send an ambiguous message with his reputable painting. The concatenation of this distinct onslaught of psychological sight and sound reverberate through his brushstrokes so that viewers can not only see but hear the image before them. As the template for my image, The Scream (Never Say Never), this value still holds. This, along with additional coded iconic messages, meets with underlying non-coded...
An Image Within An Image
Images are rarely simple. Life is complex, and so too are the things which reflect life. Often there are images within images, layers stacked on top of each other, which provide more than one fixed meaning. In the image discussed here, there are literally multiple images within the image. This often provides depth, but also means that the image is difficult to deconstruct. Moreover, as Roland Barthes discusses in his piece Rhetoric of the Image, there are multiple levels to an image; an image does not simply tell one story. It tells several, on multiple levels.
If one...
Journey
My image is one that through a mixture of several different pictures represents my journey to becoming an educator. One of the most exciting things about becoming a teacher is that there is never a final destination, just a very exciting journey with many different stops along the way. By saying there is no destination does not mean that the journey is without purpose, but it allows the person on the journey to continue learning and to continue exploring different paths.
The outline and anchor of my image is that of an apple. The apple, which is a universal symbol for teachers and...
The Future of Technology
Hands are distinctly human – no other creature has features that closely resemble them. Used in this image they represent power, control, authority and care. They are meant to infer that the future of technology, and that of the world to some degree, is up to us. Humankind has the potential to make a huge impact on the planet. In fact we have in a sense been doing so since the beginning of our species. We are always trying to shape the earth as we see fit. We invent new machines which help us understand and master the natural world. New technologies have paved the way for much great...
The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me
"Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul." This image suggests the idea that music is a healer of the soul and could even in some cases be a form of religion or salvation. Exploring the linguistic, coded iconic, and non-coded iconic messages of this image help to examine the practice of interpreting meaning from images as well as to understand and appreciate the overall intended message.
The words, "fight off your demons" incorporated into this image, signify the linguistic meaning....
What is my "Right"?
I wanted to answer two important questions which are critical to my blog: "Who am I?" and "What do I want?" Throughout my process I realized there are a few things that are important to me that I'd want to share with a future partner. Namely, my love of baseball, New York City and theatre.
I started off using the traditional 'male' and 'female' symbols as seen on bathroom doors to show not only that I'm a biological female but that I'm pansexual and don't really care what gender my partner ends up being. I wanted these to be immediately recognizable and I think that they are.
...Sports
I created this image to express my feelings and make an argument about what I believe to be true. I feel that horseback riding is not just a hobby, it’s a sport. This is to many people something to laugh at and I accept the fact that not everyone shares the same opinions as I do. But, nevertheless my blog is about horses and horseback riding and in this image I hope to convey that riding a horse is just as hard, if not harder, than throwing a football.
There's a lot of work that goes into riding. To get prepared to ride you have to groom your horse, put the saddle on them,...
