Becoming part of the larger community will help students build life relationships and increase learning to the process of education. The community will return to its role as a participant in the learning process and as a partner in creating the future. By organizing group participation in community service, students are given the opportunity of participating without the burden of finding interest on their own. They are also able to build connections in the community and add much needed resume experience. In addition to students required hours they should be asked to log 20+hrs each year. Community service requirements should be required promptly by the start of elementary school and end in college. Community service can be a very effective learning opportunity. Students may clean up a highway and learn the value of not littering, or they may be more likely to not litter when their friends and family litter. It's the learning, not the chore that matters when it comes to helping out your community. It is an administrative, faculty, staff and parental commitment to make sure their children’s or students are placed in appropriate service projects that sets out to explain the goals of the service project itself and provide students with extracurricular activities to keep students out of trouble. In an article by the American School Health Association it stated that "School-based service learning programs with young adolescents show exciting evidence of reducing antisocial and violent behaviors and school failure." The more students are involved with the community the less likely they will commit crimes. Requirement of community service does not only limit crime rates, but it also helps students reconnect themselves with the natural world. Young people have become disconnected not only from human communities but also from the natural communities that surround them. Schools helps prepare students to become leaders by providing them with opportunities to become independent and to set out basic tasks. Many young people are able to gain a sense of their own voice and authority. The benefits show up each time an act of service in shown. These benefits include higher levels of student engagement, civic participation, and environmental stewardship. It is shown that teachers change the way they teach in schools as students engage in work that matters. Reaching out to the community isn't the only kind of learning that students should experience in their time of education. But an education that consists only of the abstract won't sustain the interest of the young. All young people need to feel that what they are doing makes a difference and contributes to the welfare of others. And all of them need to believe that they can make change. For students to enjoy the service and make it effective, the service learning program should have partnerships. In 2008, the National Youth Leadership Council established practice standards for K-12 service learning. One standard for quality service learning practice is partnerships that are collaborative, mutually beneficial, and address community needs. There are many ways in making this partnership and service successful in all grade levels. These steps are provided by the Lead Peace Partnership, a successful service group which participates with middle school students. It states that communication is the first step in building a strong relationship in the service of a community. Develop a shared decision making process, this will help students improve needed skills in the classroom as well as in the community. Next Expertise and credibility, students will soon be experts at what they do which will develop independent skills. Last there should be sufficient time to develop and maintain relationships with community and students. In conclusion, service learning or community service requirement in all grade level will help to build better life skills, increase learning in a school setting, and build life relationships and partnerships. Access to community service risk the chances of students committing crimes, having a hobby and students becoming interested in the community, whether it is cleaning up litter on a highway or just wanting to help out, this awareness will build lifelong skills in the real world or when students get jobs.
