An infographic about the consumption of coffee in the USA, broken down by the amount consumed, how it is consumed, and finally what that means globally.

I decided to use my blog topic as inspiration for the infographic that I created for this project. As a runner on the UMW track team, I am racing at various track meets every weekend with a goal of decreasing my time in my events as the season progresses. I wanted to create a graphic that would display the trend that my running events are following, while also expressing just how much running I am doing all together in this year's spring track season.

Science and faith are generally perceived as mutually exclusive pursuits. One studying science is often thought to be without any desire or need for faith, and the same applies vice versa. This flowchart suggests that, though there is a lot of volleying back and forth on which side is the “right” side, there is a place where the two inevitably meet.

The drinking age in the United States should be lowered because it often only leads to underage drinking and binges. Binges are extremely detrimental to one's health as it could lead to many poor decisions and health issues including liver damage. I believe that if the drinking age in the United States was once again lowered to 18, the excitement novelty of being able to drink would decrease, and people would be less tempted to go on binges. I also believe that if the drinking age were lowered, people would learn their tolerance better and be less inclined to engage in dangerous behavior.

Owning a car has become more expensive over the years. As a college student when I think about owning a car the only cost that factors into it for me is paying for gas; however, there are so many other things factoring into it, making owning a car very expensive. I have chosen to display this by creating a “pie like” chart in the shape of a car to show the distribution of the annual cost of owning a car. The sites that I got the statistics from were both collected in 2010 and based on the average of a small, midsize, and large vehicle.

For this project I wanted to focus on children's literature; more specifically the Harry Potter series. I chose Harry Potter because for many, including myself, the books have had a very large impact on my reading and they define much of my childhood. With the release of the final installment of the film coming out this summer, I felt that it was appropriate to celebrate the success of the novels that made the movies possible. To keep the emphasis on the novels, I tried not to include any information about the movies on my graphic.

I wanted to create something with the possibility of visual simplicity. When I came across the information regarding the depletion of minerals from many of our major food sources, I knew there was some major potential to use images and symbols to get across that basic information.

For my infographic assignment, I decided to pick a topic I am passionate about and that relates to my blog theme of Green News. The Seafood Industry’s affect on the world’s oceans is a hot topic in environmental studies today, and one that I have researched heavily for my senior seminar presentation in Environmental Science. Although most of the news associated with this topic is negative and correlates with environmental degradation, there is some hope on the horizon for the future of the industry.
